Whilst it's no secret that America is in the midst of economic turmoil right now, I often find myself a little disconnected from what's going on. Why? Because I really don't own a home, have stocks or shares and at the end of the day - I actually don't live here. This isn't to say I don't care, it's just something I find hard to relate to...until now.
I picked up a copy New York Magazine's 40th Annivesary Edition and the cost of living suddenly became abudantly clear. There, in colourful pictures of yellow cabs and subway tickets, is the comparison in cost between everyday items in 1968 and 2008. It's alarming to say the least. To think that in the 60's, university tuition at NYU was $2100, compare that to $37 372 now!
I know it's all relative but at last I'm grasping what all the econmic crisis means....not to mention what's in store in the future.
NOTE: With the Australian dollar at $0.68 US cents - these prices seem even more alarming
