Hate crimes (also known as bias motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership in a certain social group, usually defined by racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation.[1]
Hate crime can take many forms. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters.---------
Being a part of the Suny New Paltz community, I had never experienced a hate crime or seen one happen. Perhaps it wasn't my lucky day ...
Today I found out that on my friends' door some appalling human being decided to leave them a loving and tender message about their sexual orientation. On their white board (which is tacked up to the front of their door like most of other college room doors) was a drawing of two penises with a word above them, fagit. We are all assuming that they were trying to spell the word faggot.
My friends are not sure who did it or with what purpose. Whether it was a repulsive act done seriously or as a joke, it was not taken lightly. It was reported to the RA and the RD of their residence hall. Further action is unknown as of right now.
I am so disgusted by this as I am sure the rest of the community would be if they knew.
Hopefully one day people will grow up and accept others for who they are or at least keep their hateful thoughts, actions, and words to themselves.
