In today's celebrity obsessed society, it is no wonder that the show Entourage has made an increasingly popular appearance on television screens each Sunday at 10 p.m. The 5th season premiered last night as SUNY New Paltz students crowded around their televisions across town eager to get a glimpse of the glamorous life of Vince, E, Turtle, and Drama. The show tells the story of these four friends, hailing from Queens, who have made it big thanks to Vince's acting talent and blue-eyed charm. The foursome live out wild adventures that many college students dream of: flashy cars, beach-side homes, exotic vacation getaways, and nightly escapades ranging from New York to LA to the Playboy Mansion. The idea stemmed from Entourage producer, Mark Wahlberg, who originally wanted to create a show based on his own life. People often feel that the dramatic events of their own lives would make for entertaining television, and Wahlberg fashioned this television phenomena out of that concept.
This review from the Times includes a synopsis of the show, an interview with Wahlberg, and parallels between the shows construction to the reality from which it was based. If you don't like the show, you can at least appreciate the notions behind it, as Wahlberg attempts to capture the essence of young people chasing the American Dream, whatever that may entail.
