MTV has always set a high standard for the 'unexpected' at their annual Video Music Awards, and last nights show sure was unexpected. Russell Brand as a host? His jokes seemed a bit harsh as he continuously bashed teen pop icons such as the Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings. The performances all lacked the luster of VMA performances produced in the past; as Christina Aguilera lip synched her way through a mix of "Genie in a Bottle" and her new song "Keep Gettin Better", while others introduced new material to the seemingly tiny audience in Los Angeles. In what could have been the most anticipated television events in recent times, Britney Spears made her triumphant 'return' to the pop scene. She graced the stage to a standing ovation uttering a mere 4 lines as she "opened" the show, only to come back up 3 more times throughout the night as she won Best Female Video, Best Pop Video as well as Video Of The Year. The VMA's have lost all credibility.
