Last game 85 years later
Tonight's game between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles was the final one played at the original Yankee Stadium, "a baseball field which is rife with nostalgic sentiment and fond memories of one of America's favorite sports."
The Yankee Stadium located in East 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx, was the home of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees since 1923 . It hosted 6,581 Yankees regular season home games through out the years since their first game against the Boston Red Sox in April 18, 1923 and had a capacity of 57,545.
In 2006, construction began on a new stadium costing about $1.6 billion and will be adjacent to the original stadium. The Yankees are expecting to open their new home in 2009 and the old stadium will be demolished and turned into a parkland. Although the construction is bitter-sweet, Yankee fans will enjoy this historic sport in a brand new home, which will be filled with much more memories to come.
