I was deeply saddened to hear the news about David Foster Wallace, a truly great American writer. To quote a colleague of mine posting on his apparent suicide: "I thought being able to laugh at the absurdity of life, and yourself, protected you from this level of misery."
Wallace was an extraordinary journalistic writer as well as a fiction writer. I highly recommend his book of non-fiction pieces, A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (please excuse the unfortunate double meaning the title now conveys). And here's a link to a pdf of a piece he wrote for Gourmet magazine a few years back about lobsters. It shows how a remarkable mind can find the deepest human themes just about anywhere.
