Banning Books?! Isn't this America?!

In a recent NY Times article, "Palin's Start in Alaska: Not Politics as Usual" by William Yardley it was revealed that among other strange things Sarah Palin pushed for, she also teased with the idea of banning certain books at the local library. Not only was Palin circulating anti-abortion fliers while running for the office of mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, but when faced with winning the office, she began to clean house of the workers, and she wanted to clear out books that were, "somehow morally or socially objectionable to her" said local resident Ms. Kilkenny. Her employees were also not allowed to speak with the press without her permission.

I don't know about you guys but reading this drives me nuts. I'm all for religion and I'm an avid church goer but that doesn't mean that I believe in creationism and all its beliefs. I'm an avid reader too, but I love fantasy and my husband loves sci-fi, so does that mean that those books would be banned too if Palin could run her perfect city? I'm scared of a woman (or man) running our country who doesn't allow for other beliefs. Did I lose my way somewhere or am I still living in America in the 21st century?

This article made me think of the movie "Field of Dreams" where there is a town hall meeting where some questionable books are being called into question. I'm an open minded person and I'm just not looking for close minded people to run our country and make America feel like a communist nation.
This is a letter that's been surfacing around the blogosphere about Palin from Anne Kilkenny; I thought it would be of interest.
